Sunscreens are the creams that we apply to our skin to protect our skin cells from getting damaged due to ultraviolet rays. Sunscreens allow us to be in the Sun for a longer time before our skin cells start to become red.  Sunscreen prevents UV  rays of the sun from getting absorbed by the skin and leading to sunburns or skin cancer, but no sunscreen can block 100% of UV radiation, so relying on sunscreen alone is not enough; you have to take other measures, like not being exposed to direct sunlight, using a wide-brimmed hat, Etc. In this blog, we are going to understand what SPF means, how to select a sunscreen based on your skin type, and how and when to reapply it.

What is a sun protection factor or SPF?

Sun protection factor is the measure of how efficiently a sunscreen can block UV rays from damaging the skin. Higher SPF means greater protection, but no sunscreen can block 100% of UV radiation. It is generally recommended to use sunscreens with an SPF of 30 to get optimum protection, reduce the amount of sun damage and prevent skin cancer.

How to select a sunscreen

  • Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen that can protect you from  UVA, UVB, and visible light
  • Select a sunscreen that is suitable for your skin type, if you have an oily combination or dry skin type
  • Select a sunscreen of SPF above 30
  • Choose a sunscreen that is water-resistant or waterproof to protect you while swimming or sweating
  • If you have oily acne-prone skin, select a sunscreen with Niacinamide and zinc in it to prevent greasiness and treat acne.
  • If you have dry skin, choose a sunscreen with hyaluronic acid and ceramides to give your skin hydration along with sun protection.
  • You can also go for a tinted sunscreen to even out your skin tone and give you a makeup-like feel.
